History of La Vergne

La Vergne is the gateway to Rutherford County and the neighbor to Nashville, the Country Music Capital of the World. La Vergne is nestled next to the 14,000-acre Percy Priest Lake offering outdoor recreation opportunities including fishing, boating and more.

La Vergne was settled in the early 1800s after the railroad was built. The name, meaning “the green,” was given by a Frenchman, Francois Leonard Gregoise De Rouhlac, one of the first settlers. The name was given because the land was so beautiful with grassy meadows and cedar trees. La Vergne could easily be called the Book Distribution Capital of the world. Ingram Content Group ships about 40 million books a year—to more than 200 countries worldwide.

La Vergne has a rich history of early pioneers, Civil War battles, devastating tornadoes, train wrecks, major industrial growth, and huge population shifts.
