I’m not sure when it started, or even how, but a few years ago I became passionate about finding not just ice cream shops, but local ice cream shops. Whenever my husband and I traveled, I began tracking down unique spots devoted to butterfat and homemade confections.
We’re lucky to have some sweet options in Rutherford County! If you’re looking for a local spot with lots of character and homemade touch, you won’t want to miss these four great ice cream shops.
Janarty’s Homemade Ice Cream

This creamery in Smyrna’s Depot District is a must-visit for the day tripper. Janarty's light and silky ice cream comes in a variety of flavors like Double Chocolate, Red Hot Cinnamon and Cookie Bar Blast, with new flavors debuting on the regular. Add house-made chocolates to your scoops or pick from bakery goods like fudge, chess bars and cake pops. Gluten-free folks will appreciate (and love) their gluten-free waffles and cookies. Don’t forget to pose for pics in front of their indoor mural and then settle in to enjoy your confections while watching people and the trains go by.

Downtown Murfreesboro's beloved ice cream shop next to parent restaurant Puckett’s Grocery is an iconic way to take in the city’s historic district while savoring local flavor. This inviting spot with the cozy patio features homemade cones and ice cream made with milk from Tennessee-based Groves Family Dairy. Try the Nana Puddin’, Peach Cobbler, Goo Goo & Jack and – for you, dairy-sensitive friends— dairy-free Coconut Watermelon & Mint. Fun merch like tees and caps are sweet souvenirs, but then there are the pre-packed pints and quarts of creamy goodness that are perfect takeaways, too.

Lovers of ice cream and brunch will adore this new addition to the local sweets scene. Varin's specializes in bubble waffles – light, fluffy egg waffles topped with ice cream and candy — and croffles, a blend of the crispiness of croissants and the softness of waffles. These are stacked with fruit, spreads/syrups and served much like pancakes with a delicious twist! Build your own creation or try a combination like the S'More, the Nutella or the Strawberry Cheesecake.
The Soda Bar

Easily one of the most Instagrammable spots in the ‘Boro, The Soda Bar in the Fountains at Gateway development is an enchanting ode to the nostalgia of a classic ice cream bar. Treat the family to a seat in the pink booths and choose from vintage-style sodas at the fountain or in a bottle, espresso creations like the Mean Bean or Café Luxe, shaved ice, or stacked scoops of signature flavors Mint Trax, Malt Ball Fudge and Captain America.
